what kind of gifts they give (like gag gifts vs homemade vs smth they plan out with a ton of meaning vs etc)

Lina shops for gifts but she puts a ton of thought into it. she will visit every store in a 10 mile radius until she finds the perfect item and she is Not settling for anything less than perfect. She's incredibly secretive about what shes getting a person and usually ignores the list interly preferring to come up with it from her own head and only using the list as a last resort

Anne gets whatevers funniest. a lot of her gifts are based on inside jokes/mildly insulting to the reciver. she puts a surprising amount of time into choosing the perfect funny gag gift, making sure they dont like it just enough to keep it forever. Lina was scanalised the first few times anne gave gifts because it was always a super thought out thing in her family but shes gotten used to it and laughs along with everyone else

Jane always makes something, no ifs ands or buts. She loves trying new types of things, one year she painted another she knitted a third she got cathy to help her write poems. even if/when it turns oht terrible she is still so proud to give it to someone. she sees it as giving someone a peice of your time and effort which is why she always does it even after the great sweater debacle.

Anna is a master of giving many small gifts. she will find rocks and grab trinkets from her rooms and usually wrap them individually because she finds it funny to watch someone unwrap a rock. When her rocks and trinkets fail her she heads out to the weirdest thrift store nearby and buys anything that even kind of reminds her of someone. Cathy has porcelain mouse skulls and kitty has a slightly garish pink butterfly painting and Lina has a really really old bible bc of these thrift stores.

Kitty is terrified of getting a gift wrong and insists everyone makes a list so that she doesnt have to worry too much. she always orders things about a week before so that they come in time but also she wants as much time to think has possible. She always feels as if her gifts are worse than the others but they always assure her that they adore her gifts too.

Cathy gives what may be considered boring gifts but its always exactly what you need. she notices your socks have holes in them? new socks. Kittys hairtie basket is getting low? pink black and gold hair ties coming right up. They always look at her gift and instantly exclaim it's exactly what they needed because it is.

Books!!! i admit im only just really starting to read again, mental illness brain rot meant the past few years have been a touch empty in terms of books but!!

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh - short novella about a very old forest, its caretaker, a young dandy who turns up, and a very old magic looking for some fun. very good, a short read but a new favorite

The Sea and Civilization by Lincoln Paine - a nautical history of human society and one of my newer acquisitions, very thorough while still being super accessible, if you're a nerd about the sea like i am or looking for a fun intro to nautical history, its a great choice.

Folklore and The Sea by Horace Palmer Beck - a collection of nautical and sea related tales and stories from around the world, the kind told by old sailors and merchant men and fishwives. Its bigger than the bible and i hold it close to my heart.

Six Memos for the Next Millenium by Italo Calvino - required reading in highschool and one of the few that stuck with me. a short collection of essays about the world and our place in it as we move forward, from the perspective of a very talented author.

Kitchen Confidential and A Chef's Tour by Anthony Bourdain - we all know how much i love and miss Tony, but his books really are a phenomenal read. Kitchen Confidential is focused on his time in the restaurant business, his various jobs and the people he met, and it is a phenomenal collection of stories and lessons learned. A Chef's Tour is focused on his later experiences as a travel writer and chef, and is one of my favorite "travel" books out there. His ability to connect with people and spark the curiosity and compassion in the reader is next to none.

Writers at Work around the World and Poets at Work, Being Two Collections of Interviews from The Paris Review - i dont care if it comes off as pretentious but i genuinely adore the Paris Review and the poets, authors, playwrites, and artists they showcase. They released two new stand alone volumes which are collections of interviews from the past idk 70 years or so, one volume being focused on poets and the other on writers. getting to hear fellow artists from multiple decades talk about their craft and personal histories is a gift. also in general, if you're looking to diversify your reading but dont know where to start/have a short attention span and are working to improve it, The Paris Review Magazine is actually a great place to do both. They release it four times a year and you can always check the roster for each issue on their website before you buy the hardcopy.

Gay New York by George Chauncey - focused mostly on Manhattan and Brooklyn, Chauncey details the long and incredibly rich history of the gay community in NYC. It centers mostly on gay cis men, though it touches on the trans community and the evolutions of language in terms of various identities quite a lot. Its a longer and sometimes heavy read, as the history of the gay community is not always a happy one, but it is a fantastic window into the lives of those who came before us and how the culture has changed over time (did you know there used to be debutante-esque balls to introduce baby gays to the community at large?? cause i sure didn't!!).

Giovanni's Room and pretty much everything written by James Baldwin- James Baldwin is a masterclass of a person and a master class of a writer. Giovanni's Room was my introduction to his writing but i truly think his work should be something akin to required reading. I would recommend finding a collection of his work and start there.

Homintern by Gregory Woods - I'm still working my way through this one but i do recommend it. In short its a showcase of great queer and gay artists from throughout modern history, Oscar Wilde is the first one discussed for example, and while Woods does make an effort to denounce the conspiracy theory that gays run the art world, he does a wonderful job of showcasing the home our community found in the art, and how their lives shaped various artistic and cultural movements throughout the western world. Its not sugar coated, but written with a lot of love.

The Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre edited by Robert Denoon Cumming - is Sartre for everyone? no. Do I love his work? yes. This collection is a great place to start if you're curious and want to start reading his work. Its not always an easy read, a lot of philosphy can be hard to work through, but I recommend it. Albert Camus and Kafka are of course also highly recommended. And i do genuinely enjoy Human all to Human and other works by Nietzsche.

i realize a lot of these are nonfiction but ive been on a kick lately, lets call it escapism through other lives lived on this mess of an earth. I'm sorry it took so long to write this up but i needed to mull it over a bit.

Summary: You end up living with Bobby after your parents die. You go to church and meet Priest Crowley and you end up getting along (if you know what i mean). A few years later when Bobby passes you move the the bunker with Sam and Dean and end up meeting Crowley again.

Let’s Get Coffee.

“Yay thank you” You yelled heading up the stairs to get changed…

Training went well, although you didn’t really do much. Bobby who was still reluctant helped you to shoot inanimate objects and some basic hand to hand combat with no weapons, because in his words “you won’t always have a weapon on you so that’s the best place to start.” You are pretty sure it’s just because he is buying time before the brothers come into town so they can deal with the more athletic training. Not because Bobby wasn’t good, he was but he was quite impatient and not the best Teacher.

Time Skip to the Next Saturday Night brought to you by Juliet.

The last week consisted of a few training lessons here and there, you were starting to get really good with a gun, and to Bobby’s ‘luck’ he did some blade training and you actually weren’t half bad. Right now, you were eating takeaway, 8pm, on the sofa with Bobby watching some old tv show.

“So kid, Winchesters are coming round tomorrow. Want me to pick you up from church to save you walking so you can see the two idjits sooner, I know you miss them”. He said emphasising miss in a teasing manor.

“Oh yeah soo much” You replied rolling your eyes. “But no, I’m good, I’m actually going out after for some coffee”.

“So, you and Lena finally meeting outside of church?”

“Nope”

“Wait so who are you meeting with then? A new boyfriend of yours? If so, I want to meet him first.”

“What? No, I’m not completely sure, just a group of us meeting up after church.”

“What do you mean you don’t know. Who asked you? That old woman that lives next to the church because if so, I wouldn’t go she will just talk everyone’s ear of about her cats”

“No, the Priest actually just to share ideas about the bible after.”

“Right well err have a good time?” He replied unsure

“Thanks Bobby I’m gonna head up now and sort everything out and go to bed”

“Don’t use up all my water, I’ll see you after your coffee, call me if you want a lift.”

“will do, night”

“Night kid.”

*Beep Beep* Your alarm read 8:30 Sunday. You go up and got showered and dressed. You opted for an outfit which made you look good but it was still simple and casual, whether you were trying a bit harder because you were seeing Crowley or because the boys were coming you wouldn’t say. You grabbed an easy snack and decided to take the scenic route as you had 30 minutes to get there and you didn’t want to wait around. You arrived exactly at 9:32 and waited a few minutes before walking in, no sign of Lena anywhere, strange. Your seats however remained empty, so you sat once again on the seconded row back. Just as you received a message.

Lena- Sorry my mums not feeling well so I’ve had to take my brother to football. Hope service is good.

(Y/N)- No problem, have fun at football.

You replied before muting your phone and sliding it away just as Crowley came out.

“Good Morning…………………………………Thank you all for coming. Bless you all and I shall see you next week.”

Looking up at the clock reading 10:30, everyone stood up and headed out the door, you however being unsure of where you were going for coffee waited at the end of the pew, letting other passed. You didn’t really focus on the topic at hand but hoped you could blag your way through the teachings of rich man and Lazarus. As everyone left Crowley once again was behind you smiling.

“(Y/N) how are you?”

“Hi, I’m good thank you, how are you doing?” you reply, once again you feel strangely flustered.  

“Better now that’s over and we can go get coffee.”

“Oh yeah about that where are we meeting?”

“I was thinking the little café down 3 blocks over. Small and easy to find a table.”

“Mrs Wolowitz’s?”

“Yes, That’s it”

“I think I know the way; well you better go, and I’ll meet you guys there” You say about to head off.

“I’m sorry love, you must be mistaken I meant just the two of us. If that’s alright”

“Yeah no sorry that more the fine, I just assumed.” You stuttered out. You hadn’t meant to jump to a conclusion but that seemed more likely then just you two going out for coffee. Alone in a small café. Damn it (Y/N) stop thinking again.

“Do you want to follow me in my car? In case you get lost?”

“Oh um.” You awkwardly laughed. “I actually walk here so I’ll get it up on my phone”

“No, no don’t be stupid you’re going in my car.”

“I wouldn’t want to intrude”

“No come on let’s go.”

The car ride was short and pretty much silent but not awkward. You were nervous but also happy you weren’t going to be stuck with a bunch of old Christians arguing about meanings. Before you got out the car, he took his clerical collar of leaving him in a normal black shirt. You got out, got a table and ordered your drinks, and reluctantly allowed Crowley to pay.

“So, Y/N how did you find todays service?” Crowley asked looking straight at you for an answer.

“Oh um, it was good” you replied suddenly feeling nervous and unsure of how to answer. You were sat in a café, with an attractive Pastor whose stare seemed to go straight through you.

“Anything to add? Any views on the passage?” Crowley said seeming slightly distracted.

“Not really no. Sorry maybe you start an idea and I’ll add?”

“I don’t really have any either, well to be honest with you I would rather get to know you then your views on the bible.”

“Me?” you smiled, this just got better now it’s apparent you probably aren’t going to be sat discussing the bible over the next half hour or so.

“Yes you” he replied a small smile resting on his lips.

“Well what do you want to know?” you didn’t really know what sort of thing to tell him so thought it best to just ask.

“Well how about we play a game?”

“A game?”

“Yes, a game, you know an activity one engages in for fun?” his smile turning slightly into a smirk.

“Oh, thanks I didn’t know what a game was, what sort of game?”

“I ask a question and you ask one back?” he paused “if you would like, if you wanted to sit around and talk about bibles, we could ask biblical ones”

“No normal questions are fine; you can start since I don’t know what games are” you say sarcastically.

Just then the waiter came and delivered your drinks, nodding his head slightly at your companion before he left. You took a sip of your drink as Crowley moved on; this wasn’t what you though this evening would be but it’s definitely an improvement.

“If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?”

“(Y/A) {your answer}”

“Why?”

“It just seems perfect. I could see myself walking around and just admiring everything there you know?”

“Well hopefully one day you’ll go.” Crowley took a sip of his steaming drink and returned to looking at you. Really looking at you, it was weird, like he was genuinely interested in what you were saying. “I’ve been a few times and I must say the {landmark} is beautiful to visit.”

“One day I will see it, anyway you seem like you’ve been to loads of places where have you been?”

“Pretty much everywhere, I do enjoy travelling.”

“wow, I wish” you sigh out.

“Do you travel?”

“Not really, when I was younger me and my parents would move around America but that stopped a while ago.”

“Oh, how come?”

“They died so I moved in with my godfather and haven’t left town since, I know if he could we would go but he needs to stay here for work and everything and now I’m blabbing on again sorry.” You said it more as a fact mentally ready for the normal oh I’m sorry and what happened and are you okay to come.

“No don’t apologise I’m interested and I’m sorry to hear about them but your godfather sounds like a good man, and maybe one day you can travel again, maybe even the world, what do you plan on being in the future?”

“Definitely the plan, and I’m not sure yet. What about you have you always dreamed of being a pastor?”

“No, definitely not. I’m only a substitute pastor anyway if there’s such a thing.”

“what do you do then when you’re not?”

“I guess you could say I’m a businessman, I mainly make deals and such.”

“oh, is that why you always travel?” You say looking down at your drink and sipping.

“Exactly why my job requires a lot of popping to places. Now if you will humour me, I’m curious, you go to church but don’t seem completely religious, is that so?”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t mean to offend you, but I notice you zoning out during teaching and you just seem… I don’t know how to put it.”

“Well if I’m honest I’m not sure about it really. The whole believing in God thing. I mean I’m sure he’s there, but I don’t think there’s much he can do.”

“So why go?”

“Well my mum used to always take me and well it makes me feel closer to her, I’m sorry if that offends you.”

“Not at all, not at all” he said a slight smirk on his face again.

This was weird, not in a bad way but weird. As the time passed, he started to become even less like a pastor and more like a friend. You continued sharing random stories finding out how he grew up in Scotland and all about his random like and dislikes. He was a nice guy and you no longer felt nervous. Time went by and you both ordered another drink. Now your cups were sitting empty and you were discussing what the best era would be to live through, when your phone beeps.

Bobby: Hey, hows the discussions going, what time do you think your going to leave I dont know if I can deal with them alone any longer and theyve only been here 3 hours as it is.

You: oh, sorry I didn’t realise the time, um ill finish my drink and leave soon. Tell them I say hi.

You slid your phone into you pocket and looked back up at Crowley. Wow you had been sat talking for over two hours.

“Everything okay?” he asked

“Yeah everything is fine just didn’t realise the time. Sorry I’m going to have to go in a minuet I have guests over and completely forgot.”

“No problem, would you like a lift back?”

“I can walk it’s fine.”

“Please at least let me drop you of at the church, I need to pick up some things there anyway.”

“Okay.”

With that the two of you got back into his car and arrived back at the church both getting out and standing in the completely deserted parking lot.

“Thank you for the lift, and the drinks.” You smiled checking you had everything and looking up at him.

“No problem I had a good time, and maybe if you would like I could get your number and we could do it again sometime, get to know each other a bit more, maybe over some food.”

If you didn’t know any better it would sound like a date offer, in fact part of you wishes it had been but pastors don’t date, do they?

“Yeah sounds good today was fun.” You grab your phone pulling up your number.

“I’m sorry that may not have been clear enough” he said looking at your phone and entering your number into his. “I was referring to going out on a date.”

“But you’re a priest?” you blurt out before thinking. Mentally slapping your head.

“A substitute priest love, and like you I don’t hold religion too close to my heart” he said chuckling and putting his phone away.

“Well in that case that sounds great. I better start heading back but text me.”

“I will, safe walk home, if you’re sure you don’t want a lift.”

“I’m sure, goodbye Crowley”

“Goodbye Y/N”

And with that you left. What just happened?

*Times Skip Home*

You walk through the door into the lounge greeted with the boys and bobby drinking beers and talking, coming to a halt when you walked in.

“Y/N, hey how have you been” Sam asks looking up at you smiling. Before you could answer Dean butted it.

“Y/N Bobby here tells us you’ve been out talking about the bible, please tell me you haven’t it’s like half one.”

“Nice to see you to Dean, and no I haven’t I met with a friend. I’m great thank you Sam, how are you?” you reply going to sit down before realising a pair of legs in the way. “Deans move your legs”

Reluctantly he swung them over the coffee table allowing you to sit down.

“Good thank you” you’re not sure if Sam would have continued but bobby spoke up.

“A friend? You said you were meeting with a group of you, lying, now are we?”

“what? No, I just got a bit confused we were going to talk about the service but we got distracted. But what’s more important is what you two have been up to.” You reply casually leaving out the fact you had spent the last two hours with a male and had half planned a date.

“No, what’s more important is you are 18. And we have something for you.” Sam said poking his head around Dean.

“Sammy’s right Dean said pulling something out his duffle bag. It was neatly wrapped and slightly battered around the edges. Sam definitely wrapped it.

“Guys you shouldn’t have.” You said unwrapping it. At first you saw a leather-bound book. It was bound with a rope wrapped around and decorated with a light house on the front.

“Open it up (Y/N/N)” Sam said.

Unwinding the rope, you opened it up to find postcards and pictures from the boys, all in Sam’s writing.

“We, well I thought you could have a journal to note down anything you want its always good to have one. The postcards and stuff are from each of the places me and Dean have been. We knew you wanted to go, and you always want to here stories so I thought it would be a good way to make it seem like you were there.”

“Sam it perfect thank you so much.” You stood up and hugged him before taking a seat back down noticing Dean had a scruffier package in his hand.

Accepting it and opening it Dean began.

“I’m not as thoughtful as Sam but I saw this, and thought would like it.”

It was a rope necklace with a stone on the end. Under the stone was a small piece of card with a handwritten message explaining the stones properties of protection and healing. You read it and put it on twiddling the stone in your fingers (You can change stone to your liking).

“It’s beautiful Dean thank you very much” you say leaning over to hug him.

“I’m glad” he says pulling back smiling.

The evening goes on, you order food and joke with each other, Bobby leaving to go to bed and the three of you falling asleep sprawled out on the couch and armchair around 11pm

Wow that was long and mainly build up, but don’t worry romance will be in the next one.  I hope you enjoyed this though, thanks for reading.

Hello to new and old followers

So I figured I’d give a shout to people, do a little bit about me, since I haven’t in a while. I’m an assistant manager at a local, family owned coffee shop, I’ve worked for them for the past 11 years. It was my boss who encouraged me to go back to college and finish my degree, saying I was far too smart to just work at a coffee shop. I sling coffee and tea, manage the social media pages, and handle maintenance and upkeep. I’m a Graphic Design major. My focuses being graphic design, printmaking (traditional, digital, and 3D), Jewelry and Metalsmithing, and Ceramics. Art and design has always been a very big part of my life. I also study constitutional law in my spare time -- because it’s good to be well-rounded right? Oh and I do quite a bit of studying finance as well as lots of historical writings. The Federalists Papers, Anti Federalist Papers, speeches, biographies, etc. I hold subscriptions to The Economist, Bloomberg Businessweek, and Kiplinger Personal Finance magazines, as well as nearly a decade-old subscription to The New York Times.

I also spend a lot of time trying to get my financial house in order -- or grow it. Laying the groundwork for my post-college plans -- like moving from Kentucky to Massachusetts. Or replacing my 2011 Dodge Avenger (when it finally bites the dust -- I’ll drive it into the ground but I plan on buying a far more eco-frendly ride to replace it with.) Or buying up design equipment, I replaced my under-powered PC a few years ago, purchased a drafting table, and have picked up two Epson printers so far. Eventually I’d like to grab a 3D printer and a Glowforge or two (sadly these things cost lots of money so I’ve not taken the plunge in either -- being an assistant manager at a coffee shop looks like a glamorous lifestyle, but I’m not exactly rolling in dough currently). I’m also passionate about people considering using folding@home. It’s a platform that allows you to lend some of your spare processing cycles when you are not using the computer to projects trying to find cures to illnesses. By “Folding” they are referring to running simulations of proteins (not the whey kind) to find cures for things like COVID, Alzheimer's, etc. It runs in the background when you are not actually using your computer, but it’s powered. Look into it and see if it’s something you’d consider joining. Especially if you have an old laptop you never use, you can just power it up, boot F@H and set it to stay awake when your laptop lid is closed and just let it run. I have two laptops in my bedroom setup just to do that, once I realized I wasn’t really using either that often currently. Anyway, that's just a little update post thing about stuff.

  I love  the church but since the advent of modern fundamentalism which gained popularity due almost entirely to their hysterical and ridiculous reaction to the theory of evolution they are comprised of people who believe literally anything. they share stories without vetting them at all because deep down they suspect their religion can’t be defended without resorting to dishonest tricks. and the sad thing is if they don’t accept that evolution is true they are right. there are many many stories in the bible that they accept as allegory, almost all of revelations for instance, they know it was never meant to be interpreted literally and when pressed they dont take it literally, genesis however, which is a perfect allegory not just for the nature of mans relationship with god, but also the beginning of the universe and gods relationship with man, that has to be taken completely literally. snakes cant talk. perhaps back then human language was a series of sss sounds and thusly the devil was able to communicate. or maybe the devil was represented as a snake because snakes are widely associated with deceitfulness. its a shame because i know whats happening, and whos responsible, and what will happen if nothing is done about it, the church will be worthless about this, because the vast majority of them lack the cold logic it takes to realize most of what they believe is not only anti biblical, but complete and total propaganda. if they were capable of understanding and not rejecting the truth they would have accepted evolution as obviously true. breaks my heart, many people were turned away from the faith thanks to this retarded distraction,  it makes it so the kind of man that is desperately needed feels Christianity would be somehow incompatible with the observable facts. and it gives the average joe the impression you have to be somewhat deluded to be a christian, and they are basically right. it should be clear to anyone who reads the bible that parables and allegories are used extensively and the writing style changes to denote whats to be taken literally and what isnt, like in a regular book. knowing that jews are responsible for the shape of the modern world, knowing it for a fact, is a lonely horrifying feeling. thats partly how you know its the truth, people believe in bigfoot because they want to, it would be pretty cool for a large primate to be living in north america, likewise many conspiracy theories give people the illusion that at least someone is in charge and its not as chaotic as it is. there is no comfort whatsoever to be found in knowing the extent and result of jewish influence in the west. its a terrible thing, because you know you will be ostracized, people will think you are crazy and worst of all you must do something about it, its your responsibility to tell other people. i am old, at least too old to still harbor those revolutionary feelings young men have, im not doing this because it makes me feel important and i KNOW it doesnt make me look good. im doing it because its my duty. i know that people are suffering badly because of them and it gets worse every single day. i spend little time laying out the case myself because you are propagandized to reject the truth. the holocaust is the founding even of the new america, its ability to shut down rational thinking by uttering its name is the reason most political conversations eventually lead back to hitler. it must remain forever relevant because its purpose is to give moral weight to leftist accusations of racism. anyway if you think “that could be true” but you need evidence to back up what you believe (i appreciate that and i feel the same) i suggest reading Culture of Critique. if you dont have time for that here is a one hour video summary, just watch the first 8 minute segment, if you find it too dry or just plain don’t buy it fine, but i ask you not to judge me until you do at least that much.

WARNING: Death Mention

You sit on the deep windowsill, knees pulled up against your chest, chin resting atop your knees, eyes focused on the rain pounding against the pane of cool glass.

You sigh, breath fogging up the glass for a second, and you wonder if when it fades, you’ll be able to see through the rain to the intersection only five blocks away. The heavy rain obscures it, but on good days, you can spot it, watch the cars ramble past as though nothing matters.

For a moment, you think you smell pine and rosemary, a combination that shoots hope through you, and, despite everything, despite the memories, despite the old gown hanging in the back of your closet, you shut your eyes and let yourself pretend that Newt’s here, just in the other room mixing you a cup of tea with honey, waiting to curl up on the other half of the ledge and discuss your future the way you used to. For that moment, it’s like he never left. You breathe in again, begging the air for one more waft of the familiar scent, but the smell is gone as quickly as it appeared.

A sharp twinge of pain shoots through your chest, reopening old wounds you sewed shut a few months before. Unfortunately, you’ve never been good at sewing and your stitches tear out with any small prick of a memory.

Tears well up in your eyes, but a smile drifts onto your lips when the small puppy you’d adopted with Newt hops onto the ledge, licking at your foot before curling into a ball, tiny nose pressing against the pane, huffing small clouds onto the glass.

You peer back out at the rain, letting it transport you, letting it take you back to back the first time you’d met Newt: a sunny day that flipped on its side faster than you’d ever seen.

You’d been wandering the town, trying to find a very specific shoe store recommended by your friend when he bumped into you, apologizing quickly, starting to walk away, but stopping when he saw your expression. “Sorry to bother, but do you need help?”

“I’m looking for a store, but I think I might be a little lost.” You’d admitted it with a quiet, ashamed smile, one directed at the ground. “I’ve just moved here for a job that I begin on Monday; I’m going to be late tomorrow if I don’t figure out these twisted streets.”

With that, he’d grinned a nervous half-grin that could melt the hardest heart. “I’m Newt.”

“A pleasure.” You’d murmured, introducing yourself and waiting for his next directive, but before he could say another thing, rain was falling, heavy drops bursting open on the crowns of your heads, plopping against the sidewalk. Newt grabbed your arm, tugging you toward him, and you’d followed him under an awning without hesitation. There was something about him even then that was dragging you in, intoxicating you.

“It was just sunny. How’s it already raining?” You’d asked, brushing water droplets from your hair, blushing when he gently knocked one from your cheekbone with a simple flick of his finger.

“This is London. A bit of sun means nothing.” Oh, he’d had the most charming smile, one that crinkled his eyes. When he laughed, his nose had scrunched up the tiniest bit, and your heart had dropped in your chest. The one.

A curse, those words. What do people know about fate except that it gives only to take away? The memory fades as the words echo in your empty chest. You had truly believed them, truly thought you’d found your forever.

Lightning flashes just outside, and thunder follows close behind it, shaking the house. You shake your head, lips parted as you sigh and pull a silver ring off your finger, spinning and twisting it so the dim light glimmers off of it, casts small refractions against the wall. Your dog perks up, eyes following the light, and you continue the movement, giving him a small moment to play as you stare down at the ring.

It’s old, a ring bought on a trip to Venice, found in a drawer in an antique store. You’d caught your breath when you’d noticed it among the useless baubles and costume jewelry.

Newt had gravitated toward you, hands landing on your waist. “You should buy it.”

You snorted then as you do now. Ridiculous. The thing cost a fortune, far too much for you to afford back then. “Don’t be absurd. I can’t.”

“Why not?”

“It’s expensive, Newt.”

He’d smiled at that, taking the ring from you, his soft hand brushing your own. “Then allow me.”

You’d grabbed for it, but he’d just slid his hand into yours, lacing his fingers through yours and holding it at his side. The gesture paused your attack. You’d held hands before, but never so casually in public. Newt had always been more reserved, against any sign of affection in public outside of adoring looks. So when he’d paid for the ring, walked through the shop, and led you outside without letting go of your hand, you were amazed. The one. He’d grinned when he saw the rain pouring from the sky.

“So much for a lovely date.”

“Don’t you like the rain?”

He’d looked at you then with that calm gaze, one you’d come to understand was the way he looked at anyone he loves. It sent a warmth creeping through your chest and stomach. “I enjoy it, yes. Do you?”

You’d thought back to first meeting him, then the picnic ruined by a sudden storm in Scotland, and the time he’d first kissed you in a slight drizzle after asking. “I know it isn’t perfect, but I’d rather not wait another week, if that’s all right with you.”

You’d smiled at him, considering his question about the rain, then answering his question honestly. “I love the rain, too.”

And you did. Still do, if you’re being truthful. There’s not much you wouldn’t do to remember the pleasant times, the times in your life where you were truly happy, truly living, while at Newt’s side.

With every rainy day, you can remember them, close your eyes and pretend you’re back to when Newt’s wet hands landed on your cheeks and gently tugged you forward to meet his lips, can pretend it’s the same day as when you shrieked as the downpour drenched your food and you pulled Newt to shelter.

But with every rainy day, with every day that’s even cloudy, you can’t block out the worst of it all.

You received the news on a Tuesday. His mother was on the phone, saying she knew he would want to tell you first. So you went out shopping, bought yourself a new dress that would fit well for the day, knowing he would agree that’s it perfect if he saw it. Newt had a way of being sweet without even meaning to.

You got in your car five days after the phone call, on a dreary Sunday afternoon, and drove five miles out. Everyone was mingling, waiting for the service to begin. You found yourself the seat reserved next to his mother, sat next to her, squeezed her hand. “It’ll be all right.” No, it wouldn’t, you knew, but Mrs. Scamander didn’t need to know.

The priest talked and talked and talked, reading from his bible, looking at the crowd, smiling, but it was wrong. It was all wrong. You’re not supposed to be sitting here. You’re supposed to see him standing at the end of the aisle, running a hand over his face when you turn toward him; he’s supposed to be wiping away tears, Pickett poking up from his pocket and pinching his arm in celebration. He’s not supposed to be carried up. People aren’t supposed to give speeches during the ceremony, that’s supposed to happen after.

You listened to story after story, comparing them to the ones in your head, the ones you cherished above everything, and you find that none of them could match the stories you share with him.

A light drizzle started during the ceremony, seeping through your shoes and wetting the sleeves of your coat. The ground turned to mud, and guests’ shoes made ugly shlooping noises as they stomped up to the newly filled hole in the ground. You know if Newt were there next to you, he’d nudge you, tell you how lucky he is that even the angels would cry for him. That if he were next to you, he’d be doing whatever he could to drive the tears in your eyes away, rubbing them away with his thumbs, making joke after joke until you smiled. But he wasn’t next to you, and no amount of condolences from mere acquaintances could have even a smidge of the effect Newt had.

You stayed there even after Theseus led Mrs. Scamander away, cradling her sobbing body with one arm. “He’s happy somewhere, mum.”

Theseus, a strong man. You’re grateful for him when he returns to see you, sitting in the mud next to you, eyes not lingering on the way you wrap an arm around the tombstone, the way you let the rain soak into your skin. You stayed there in silence. Newt wasn’t around to pull you from the rain, to drag you away and laugh with you, and Theseus was grieving himself. So the two of you sat there until you both ran out of tears, and, when that happened, you got in your cars and drove home, fully awake but also fully numb.

You forgot the next few days, forgot what had occurred, didn’t realize anything was amiss at the beginning of the day until you crawled into the case and it was barren, Newt not there. Newt not anywhere you could reach. Then it’d all swing back and you’d weep, sitting down wherever you were and wrapping your arms around yourself until you could stop the tears, until you could imagine Newt helping you up, telling you it would be all right.

You stand, stepping off the ledge and crossing the quiet living room. Lifting a quill, you slide a piece of parchment onto the desk and start a letter. It will go nowhere, be sent to no one, but it helps. It’s like he’s here, talking to you, and when you write, you can sometimes feel the brush of his hand on your arm or hear his boots pound behind you as he rushed to bring an injured creature to the case. You smile again as you finish the letter and lift it. It shouldn’t help but it does and you let out a deep breath. Someday, you’ll see him again. Until then, you have quills and parchment and rainy days.

Love, it’s raining again. One of our days. I miss you too much to say, and I cannot wait for our reunion. Wait for me wherever you are, darling, and know that I will always carry you in my heart from now until forever. Xo, yours.

As an American that is very seriously considering moving out of country somewhere and is considering moving to a Scandinavian country, I'd really appreciate it if you'd share a little bit about what life is like there? Do you enjoy living in Finland?? Sorry if this is weird...America is just a pretty scary place to be lately.

first of all; i spent half an hour writing the answer and then accidentally closed the tab. i am sCREAMING INSIDE !!!!!

but, lets do this again, so:

hey!! yeah i am from finland! born and raised! and its not weird to ask ,, tbh i kinda get your point. i actually answered to an ask yesterday telling what are my 5 favorite things about living in finland, but i can tell you some more under the cut, especially differences etc ! this was actually fun to write 

ok first things first, food is very expensive. ofc not in fast food chains like mc donalds etc, but restaurant-restaurants are expensive and also grocery stores, unless you’re buying the store’s own product so at least we’ve got a cheaper option. but yeah restaurants are very expensive (salads starting from 12euros, pizzas from 13euros, chinese/nepalese starting from 12euros, sushi is so damn expensive dont even get me started on that, i only ever eat it in a lunch buffet… and if you wanna order a steak or something like that lmao prepare to pay nearly 20euros OR MORE),, anyway during lunch hours there are usually special offers. coffee prices aren’t that bad. we also have starbucks! but not all the drinks that you guys have

just like food, alcohol is very expensive, so if you like your liquor be ready waste a lot of money on it. thats why finnish people actually go to estonia by ship to full the cabinets bc their alcohol is so much cheaper! its a finnish tradition lol. same goes with cigarettes. its 8 euros for a pack in here so 9 dollars.

traveling abroad is pretty expensive, but mostly just to the states and some very exotic places like the maldives idk. its like 1000euros to travel to california (i would know because i’ve always wanted to visit but im poor af 3). traveling inside finland is not that expensive , gas is p expensive but depends on the gas station 

clothes are not that expensive, at least it depends on what you’re buying. mostly anyway its the same price range that in usa i think but we don’t have the same stores, at least not forever 21 and primark for example but we do have h&m and zara and then some european stores like bik bok (which is my personal fav!) also victoria’s secret is super expensive cause it’s not normal for finns. there are only 2 of them in here anyway, one in the capital city aka helsinki and a small one at the airport

now to holidays! in actual calendar order ;-) valentine’s day; not big on celebrating, stores have stuff and some people do spend it but… not like… many easter; we have a thing similar to trick or treating, kids only dress as bunnies and witches tho may day; basically students (from like college) get “crowned “with student caps. everyone goes out to a park for a picnic and to drink. a lot. im telling you finnish people are huge drunks,, also its part of the tradition to dress funnily, stores sell weird may day clothing (like glittery hats and neon colored sunglasses), also there are sugar donuts and a either alcoholic or non-alcoholic (you decide) drink called sima. aaand decorations like balloons and paper streamers are literally everywhere midsummer; other finns go to their cottages and barbecue and go to sauna and swim in the lake. others go to a festival to get wasted. either way its a beautiful finnish tradition lmao, also this is the night when the sun shines for the whooole night!! not like literally shines but its not dark at all. there are bonfires and honestly, i’d say midsummer is the one holiday where finnish people really drink. like its -the- heavy drinking holidayhalloween; NO trick or treating which was very sad to kid-me bc no one gave me candy when i went t-o-t as a kid. also still pissed off cause it’s my fav holiday. stores sell halloween stuff and people dress up for parties, but no one really decorates. which sucks. finland sucks for halloween tbh. one plus is that we have the perfect halloween weather because its super dark and chilly and rainy and orange leaves everywhere during halloween-time!!thanks-giving; very very very little people celebrate this. definitely not a common thing. i only do it with friends and we call it friends-givingindependence day; obviously finland’s independence day. 100 years this year!!! christmas; 1000000% celebrate. so much snow. so cold. every store has christmas things and plays christmas music. everyone decorates. i mean it’s only fair bc santa claus lives in finland duhnew year; well i don’t think theres a country that doesn’t celebrate this tbh. stores sell stuff again. we have fireworks. also a lot of drinking. againalso obvs moher’s day and father’s day

concerts happen, not as often (especially with big stars) as they do in the states, but they happen! so do festivals. i actually summer-work at the largest one in finland ayyyyyy 

also, finnish people swear. like. a lot

MINUSES;- it can get freezing in the winter. last winter the lowest we hit was like -32 degrees- most of the time during summer it rains. this is also a finnish people joke because there was a meme saying “in the bible it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. they called it the apocalypse. in finland it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. they called it summer”- some finns are very narrow-minded, so expect not everyone to definitely not agree with you. i actually have a hard time dealing with this and usually always stood out from the mass mainly bc i am way too social and open-minded and everything to hang out with kids my age because their opinions and standards never really match to mine. finns are tbh kinda raised to be cold and they have to be well educated. oh boy if you only would’ve heard all the things they have told me after i have told them that i wanna make a living out of singing and acting and writing! - well the expensive things that i mentioned and the lack of halloween :-( - also if you wanna make it big, like international-big, in the music industry for example, it is very hard to try and do that from here because literally no one either knows that we exist or thinks that we live in igloos and have polar bears in our backyard. also everyone loves sweden more lmao and we hate that. there’s actually a finnish joke ,, we won them in hockey one year with 6-1 and every time we argue with a swedish person… thats always a great comeback, no matter how long its been :-)

PLUS- THINGS;+ we are mostly a very safe country with an amazing president+ free health insurance+ free studying + same sex marriage is approved+ summer is very beautiful if its not raining. especially in the countryside. amazing!!! + finns aren’t over-all bad, for example there is an incredible bond between finns when it comes to extreme finnish stuff, like midsummer drinking, seeing dramatic movies that revolve around finnish history (like war for example, a re-make of an old movie called the unknown soldier just came out and it was intense in the cinema!), hockey victory and this especially!!!! like it doesn’t matter if you hated that guy from your math class, if you two run into each other on a victory night, you fucking hug for three hours because WE FUCKING WON and tbh that is what i find most beautiful in our culture. its cute + ok honestly, just christmas again. finland is the winter wonderland i am telling you!

overall, i enjoy living in finland very much. it is a home and even though i wish to live abroad one day, finland will always be my home!! so if you really wanna move out, i suggest you at least consider finland. we are actually an amazing country. i hope this helped you! XO

Wonderful 'How To' book which answers nearly every subject involving cat ownership....except one! Love, love this book, except for one thing....when looking for information for getting rid of hair matts on our two year old maine coon cat...nothing was suggested, except taking to groomer, and possibly putting down with anesthetic, which is a bad thing to do, let alone the extra costs involved. So, googled home remedies for cat mstts, and found wonderful solutions, that involved rubbing s little olive or baby oil into the Matt, and miraculously, the cat is able to untangle by himself...but does leave s little bald spot, which is not harmful, as hair quickly grows back! I was able to cancel appt. with groomer to shave our Cat, save him from the trauma, as well as $$! If you just get some blunt nose trimming scissors, and trim off the top of the mat before rubbing with s few drops of olive or baby oil...the matts do disappear..some overnight! Go to Amazon

Classic Must-Have Guide to Cat Care I am reviewing the book "The Natural Cat" by Anitra Frazier. I have had cats in my life since I was 5 years old (over 50 years of cats !) and my parents before me had cats most of their adult lives. This is an exceptional reference book, filled with useful, practical, interesting information. If you read no further in this review, the main takeaway to me is - Do not feed your cat commercial mainstream brand cat food. Just as the overly processed SAD (standard American diet) is to American people, so is much of the supermarket overly processed cat food to cats (not the healthiest). Anitra Frazier details a better diet to feed your cat, which likely would prevent many of the "common" cat ailments that arise. If your cat has any ailments, this book will tell you what to do. If your cat is healthy and you want to keep it healthy, this book will tell you what to do. If you want to make your cat healthier and happier, this book will tell you how to do it. It is focused more on what is termed "alternative" holistic care-natural interventions and care strategies, yet does not discount the role of "Western" vet oriented care when needed. This is my go-to cat care book and I highly recommend this book to every cat owner. I found the information both effective and enlightening. Go to Amazon

A "health" dictionary for the holistic cat owner I'm the kind of person who treats my ailments with herbs, etc. So I wanted to be able to do the same for my cat. This book offered me many ways to do that. It was clear, with a good index, and covered a lot of subjects. The suggestions take you from "big jobs" of making your cat's raw meals, to simple things, like comforting your cat. It is sort of a dictionary, as it gives you brand names (vitamins --Vita Mix), and recipes. You can look up "cat dander," and learn what it is and what to do about it. So you dont have to read it from cover to cover (although I did glance thru the whole book, as you never know what "you didn't know to ask"). Go to Amazon

A Classic For Cat Owners This is a classic that I first bought in the 80's. It is valuable in that it reminds you to be compassionate to the cat's point of view. It is one of the for I would recommend - require! - for all cat owners. The others are Don Hamilton's Guide to Homeopathy, THe Home Veterinary Handbook by Eldredge, and Richard Pitcairn's Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. Pushes her own product line too much My first copy of this book, which I bought way back when, was an excellent book full of great information and resources. Sadly, this edition is not so great. On every page there are references to her own line of pet food and supplement products. She used to focus on true healthy fresh food feeding and supplements. She does reference Dr Pitcairn frequently and Dr Plechner occasionally, both vets whose works I am familiar with, but it feels more like name dropping than real information. In the summer of 2018, I moved to Malaysia and, without meaning to, continued to write songs.

‘Carried Your Weight’ is quite simply a release of frustration at a situation back home which I felt powerless to influence or help resolve; I could only observe from afar.

Living 7000 miles away from your family and friends has its difficulties, and feeling the distance is definitely one of them. This track is personal and I think you can really hear that in my vocal takes.

It’s difficult to explain why I create, but I’ve definitely used my time away from family and friends as a source of “inspiration”. I’m not particularly good at answering questions or expressing myself under pressure; taking time to write songs helps me reflect and articulate things in a way that I struggle to, ordinarily. 

Aside from this, after releasing two acoustic full-length records, I just really wanted to make some noise and get loud!

How do you think this release represents your current direction?

‘Carried Your Weight’ is a very significant release for me, as it represents a new beginning and direction for my music. As I mentioned before, my previous releases have been acoustically driven, but I’ve found that by adding additional instruments and starting a “band”, I feel I’m able to express myself in greater depth. 

I worked with a wonderfully kind and talented producer and a drummer called Paul West at Awesome Source Recording. He has helped me capture ideas that shaped this song, and I’m incredibly grateful for his help.

What most inspires you?

I’ve spent the last few years living abroad and this has given me some great memories and also some incredibly humbling experiences. I love writing songs because it challenges me to communicate and capture these memories and experiences. Everything I write tends to be quite emotionally charged; I wouldn’t want to release music that wasn’t genuine. 

Writing songs is incredibly enriching when you achieve something that you’re proud of. It takes me a long time to write music because I want to achieve balance, meaning, connection and musical ideas that resonate with me. There’s a lot to consider and many important decisions to be made with every song.

Music and art are about tangible, substantive connections and emotional commonalities. I guess you have to prioritize what's more important, money, or matter. Chris Franz Its easier to promote yourself but the numbers you are required to have on all social media platforms restricts a lot of new talent from even a shot at becoming big. For example the model country music uses now for new artist is to not only get them touring but also get them on a radio tour as well. Of course the artists must foot the bill but its really the only way to get near the charts. You dont have to be number 1 on the charts to get noticed but you need to on the chart. Social media becomes a marketing tool but ultimately you need to increase your fan base the old fashion way. Playing the gigs and getting the fans.

People are aware of the physical, financial, mental, and emotional investment there is when creating music and the very low return rate on any profit, and yet, they are willing to like, share, comment on posts of trendy or famous people, but not their own creative family and friends. So yes, likes, comments, and all that social media stuff matters, because that is how people hear anything these days. Without an active social media base, there is no one to hear your music. Also, I’ve known people who have a large following and when something gets put out, like an album or a simple single, almost none of those social media followers will even spend the blessed $1 it takes to support the person lol ... oy! So you can’t even say having active followers guarantees anything! AhhhhH!

They told me I would have to pay the towing and storage fee to recover my car from the impound. So I left and went to the impound paid $218.00 to discover that my vehicle had been totaled. So I had it towed to my house where I called the insurance company to report this. After I reported this incident they took a recorded statement and gave me a claim number. I waited for 2days for my adjuster to call me back and he never did. about 2 weeks later my adjuster calls and leaves me a message saying he needed another recorded statement and to call him back. I call back and got his voice mail. I spoke to one of his colleagues and they said they would send him and his manager a memo to call me back..well that never happened. 1 week after that I get a packet in the mail asking for my cell phone records, keys to the vehicle, and a notarized affidavit. I sent these things back and then a detective from the insurance company calls me and said there were red flags and he needed to get a video recorded statement. I agreed and went to give the statement. A few days later a detective from the police department where my car was recovered from calls me and tells me that my youngest son's father was with some friends at a nightclub were a drive-by shooting occurred and my son's father wasn't shot but the young man he was with was and as a result of them trying to escape the scene my car was crashed. As they arrived to the scene and asked questions about what happened my son's father would not admit he was driving the vehicle, and because they didn't actually see him driving or pull him over they could not prosecute. The detective asked me did I know anything about this incident and I replied hell no! The night of the incident my son's father had came to my house around 3am but never mentioned anything of course because he knows I would have tried to kill him. He also knows I would have been pissed because I never let him drive my car for the 3 years that I have known him, he has never had a license. She ask me was it ok to list him as a suspect and I told her Yes! I let her know that he did not have permission to drive my car under any circumstances. The very next day the detective from the insurance company called me and ask me what was my son's father name and what where the numbers that where called on my cell phone records. He asked why did he call me at 2:54am, I explained he wanted to let me know he was on his way over which wasn't out of the ordinary for him to do. So then the detective tells me my story stinks and I need to withdraw my claim because on my interview I didn't disclose that my boyfriend had come to my house. I told him why did I need to disclose who was sleeping in my bed if it had nothing to do with my car. I mean we know now he had something to do with it but I didn't know then. He told me the police detective also had the keys to my car which was a lie. It clearly states on the impound record that they had no keys. Not to mention the car has broken locks and loose wires I guess he didn't read that part of the report. He also told me I was trying to cover for my son's dad to get the car covered. I told him he could arrest him for GTA for all I care. My car was stolen and no matter who stole it I'm the victim and of course I want my car covered. He then said he was denying the claim and sending the case to the Department of Insurance to see if fraud was committed. Im beyond frustrated because I have nothing to do with what my son's dad did. Should I sue?""
